Several Paper sizes

Foolscap is a size of paper, 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) by 17 inches (43.2 cm).


If a Foolscap paper is divided into halves, the paper size becomes 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) by 13.5 inches (34.3 cm). It is known as foolscap folio or folio paper.

Some times it is called as full-scap or full-scape.

Jokers, clowns, comedians, jesters, entertainers, or fools used to wear caps that were made by using the papers of this size.

Foolscap sheets, if divided into halves, quarters and eighths they will be called as folio, quarto and octavo, respectively.

A4 paper measures 8.3 inches (21 cm) by 11.7 inches (29.7 cm) is a standard paper now-a-days.

Letter size paper measures 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) by 11 inches (27.9 cm).

Legal paper measures 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) by 14 inches (35.6 cm).

DA Arrears from 01 Jul 2012



Government of India hiked DA by 7% for central Government Employees and Pensioners.

DA increased from 65 per cent to 72 per cent

On 25 September 2012, the Central Government hiked the Dearness Allowance (DA) by 7 per cent for its employees and pensioners, and allowed pension proposals for personnel of armed forces.

The hike in DA to 72 per cent of basic pay will be effective from 01 July 2012, and the Dearness Allowance arrears are entitled from this date.

The government increased DA last in the month of March this year from 58 per cent to 65 per cent, with effect from 01 January 2012.

The combined impact on the exchequer on account of both Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief (in case of pensioners) would be Rs.7,408.24 Crore per annum and Rs. 4,938.78 Crore for the remaining part of the financial year 2012-2013.

The decision, which was approved by the Union Cabinet, will benefit about 50 Lakhs employees and 30 Lakhs pensioners of the central government.

The increase in DA is in accordance with the accepted formula based on the recommendations of the Sixth Central Pay Commission.

Also, ‘The Union Cabinet’ approved four proposals related to pensioners from armed forces. These would cost the exchequer Rs 2,300 Crore annually.

Services personnel, who have retired before January 2006, will now be entitled to pension almost equal to their counterparts who retired afterwards.

The government said that dual family pension would be allowed in present and future cases.

The Cabinet also allowed grant of family pension for ex-servicemen, to mentally and physically challenged children "who drew, are drawing or may draw would continue even after their marriage".

Pro-Forma Invoice or Performa Invoice


 It is a preliminary bill of sale sent to buyers in advance of a shipment or delivery of goods.

 It gives a description of the purchased items, indicates the cost and important information like shipping weight and transport charges.

 Pro forma invoices are usually used for customs purposes on imports.

 A pro forma invoice varies from a normal quotation.

 It is usually considered a binding agreement whereas in a quotation, the terms of sale are subject to change.

 Pro forma invoices are used in many businesses.

 A Pro forma invoice is an invoice provided by a supplier in advance of providing the goods or service; a quotation in the form of an invoice prepared by the seller that explains items which would appear on a commercial invoice if an order results.

 Pro forma invoice mainly contains the same information of formal quotation.

 It gives the buyer most of the information about the order to effectively make arrangements. The invoices inform the buyer and the appropriate import government authorities, details of the future shipment; changes should not be made without the buyer’s consent.

 The points included in the pro forma are Seller’s name and address, Buyer’s name and address, Buyer’s reference, Items quoted, Prices of items: per unit and extended totals, Weights and dimensions of quoted products, Discounts, if applicable, Terms of sale or Inco term used (include delivery point), Terms of payment, Estimated shipping date, Validity date.

 The seller provides a pro-forma invoice, when a buyer asks for a quotation.

 The buyer may show the pro-forma invoice to the government for foreign currency allocation. An accurate and professionally submitted pro forma invoice helps a buyer to make a decision and agree to the quotation.

DA from July 2012

Dearness Allowance for Central Government Employees and Pensioners


 It is assumed that the additional Dearness Allowance is likely to be 7% or more with effect from July 2012, making a total D.A. of 72% or more.


 The above calculation was arrived at by monitoring the increase in AICPIN (All India Consumer Price Index Number).


 AICPIN declared by the Labour Bureau for the month of April 2012 was 205 (Increased by 4 points).


 Similarly, the AICPIN declared for the month of May 2012 was 206 (Increased by 1 point).


 Additional DA is calculated based on the previous six month’s AICPIN (IW).

Protect yourself from electric shock

Safety tips



• Use only electrical gadgets with ISI mark. Carry out all electrical works by certified electricians.
• Inspect electrical wiring regularly and renew deteriorated wiring.
• Hanging wet clothes on electric wires will prove fatal.


• Do not go near or touch the electric poles, stay wires, fencing etc., during rainy seasons.


• Do not use electric poles as support to tent, temporary shelter.


• Do not display advertisements on electric poles.


• Do not secure poultries or domestic animals to the electric poles or the stay wires.


• If any snapped electricity conductors are noticed, inform the nearest Electricity Board. Do not touch or go near them.


• Do not construct buildings near electric lines. Consult the Electricity Board officials before planning for the same.


• Watch your children while they are playing with kites near any electric overhead lines.


• Do not go near the fencing of electrical transformers or substations for nature’s call.


• Do not park vehicles near transformer structure or electric line and carry out loading and unloading of materials.


• Do not drive vehicles or carry ladders etc., which are of greater height beneath the electric lines.


• During Car Festival, for running cars of higher pitch, seek the help of Electricity Board officials for ensuring the safety of the public.


• Care should be taken while digging the ground for any work near underground electric cables.


• Electrification of fencing should not be done which can lead to loss of lives. Doing so is punishable with imprisonment.

Dearness Allowance Arrears



     On Friday, 23 March 2012, the Union Cabinet approved to release an additional installment of dearness allowance (DA) to central government employees and dearness relief (DR) to pensioners with effect from 01 January 2012, representing an increase of seven percent (7%) over the existing rate of 58 percent of the basic pay/pension, to compensate for price rise.
